Dolphin Surf Boost vs MG4 Urban Comfort: is the fifth seat worth paying for?

Surf Boost suits four-person households wanting a smaller car and lower purchase reference. MG4 Urban Comfort is the practical starting point when a fifth seat is essential.

The verdict

Choose Surf Boost for a four-person household prioritising a smaller car and a lower current purchase reference. Choose MG4 Urban Comfort Standard Range when a fifth approved seat or the larger cabin is essential; do not pay more merely for a claimed two-minute charging advantage.

Buy the BYD Dolphin Surf Boost if

Four seats are enough and a short, narrow car matters more than carrying a fifth person.

Buy the MG4 Urban Comfort Standard Range if

You need five approved seats and the larger body fits your parking and household load.

Pay for the fifth seat only if you need it

Choose Dolphin Surf Boost first if your car normally carries one to four people and your parking space rewards a smaller footprint. Choose MG4 Urban Comfort Standard Range first if you need to carry a fifth person, or the larger cabin solves a regular family task. The MG is not simply a faster-charging alternative to the Surf: the approved seating layout is a more decisive difference than either peak charging power or a short laboratory session.

Four approved seats cannot substitute for five, even when the fifth passenger travels only occasionally. For a household that occasionally takes grandparents or a child's friend, that requirement can settle the choice before a test drive. For a couple with an awkward driveway, paying for additional body size and a centre rear position that will never be used may be poor value. Both answers depend on your actual journeys rather than which badge appears to offer the most car.

Boost and the new front-drive Urban are the selected cars

The BYD is the UK Dolphin Surf Boost: a 43.2 kWh battery, 65 kW front motor and four-seat layout. It is not the larger Dolphin, the smaller-battery Surf Active or the more powerful Surf Comfort. Boost adds powered front-seat adjustment, rain-sensing wipers and electrically folding mirrors to the basic Surf equipment. Its official combined WLTP range is 200 miles; the much higher city-cycle headline is a different use case.

The MG here is the new front-wheel-drive MG4 EV Urban Comfort Standard Range. Its current UK configurator explicitly selects 42.8 kWh, 110 kW and a single-speed automatic transmission. The battery is also marketed using the rounded 43 kWh label. Older rear-wheel-drive MG4 reviews, the 53.9 kWh Urban Long Range and Premium equipment do not describe this car. Current UK manufacturer and authorised-retailer sales pages provide enquiry or test-drive routes; neither page alone confirms delivery of a particular vehicle.

The lower BYD reference needs a like-for-like quotation

On 21 October 2026, the selected Lookers Surf Boost page shows £20,534.36 in the Cash Price field of a representative PCP example. Its offer period is 7 October to 31 December 2026, subject to status and the published finance terms. That field is useful when requesting a cash quotation, but it does not establish that every buyer can order the same specification for that amount independently of the example. BYD's manufacturer list reference for Boost is £21,950 OTR.

MG's current configurator shows £23,495 for Comfort Standard Range in Arctic White; Toomey also lists a £23,495 OTR Comfort starting reference. Another retailer advertises a lower from-price, which is not a reason to silently deduct a grant from the manufacturer's selected price. Compare written cash quotations with the same paint and delivery requirements before treating the references as a payable price gap. Itemise discounts, funding conditions, accessories and the delivery date. A monthly instalment, optional final payment and manufacturer contribution are separate parts of a credit agreement, not interchangeable cash prices.

A longer body helps only when the space is useful

BYD publishes a 3,990 mm length and 1,720 mm body width for Surf. The selected MG dealer specifications give 4,395 mm and 1,842 mm respectively. That makes the MG a materially larger parking proposition, even before you check mirror clearance, door opening and the way either car fits between your driveway walls. Measure your own space with the mirrors and doors in the positions you actually use. Do not use a body-width figure as a guarantee that a narrow garage will work.

Surf's stated seats-up luggage capacity is 308 litres. MG advertises up to 577 litres, explicitly including 98 litres of underfloor space; a separate retailer feed uses another load-volume description. The published boot figures use different descriptions, so try the same luggage before treating litres as usable space. Load the pushchair or mobility aid without taking it apart differently in the two cars. Then check the rear passengers' positions and whether access to the underfloor compartment is practical with the boot already full.

The charging window is comparable; a real trip still is not

BYD declares up to 85 kW DC for Boost, with a 10-80% session of 30 minutes. Its separate 30-80% figure is 22 minutes and must not be compared directly with MG's wider window. MG's current UK footnote specifically assigns the 28-minute 10-80% claim to Comfort Standard Range on a suitable 150 kW ultra-fast charger under standardised conditions. The charger's rating is not a claim that this MG accepts 150 kW at the battery.

The two declared charging sessions cover 10-80%, but their test conditions do not establish a real-world two-minute advantage. Battery temperature, starting charge, the charger and power sharing can change either stop. For a weekly motorway trip, plan the same destination with a realistic reserve and check chargers that are actually convenient. For everyday home charging, Surf's published 11 kW AC capability also depends on a compatible three-phase supply; it does not turn an ordinary single-phase home installation into an 11 kW connection. Obtain the selected MG's AC specification and installation quotation before assigning it an overnight advantage.

Buy the selected grade, not the advertising photograph

Surf Boost includes a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors and a 10.1-inch central display. Its powered front-seat adjustment is a concrete convenience for drivers sharing the car. Heated front seats and the surround-view camera belong to the higher Surf Comfort specification, not Boost. That distinction matters if winter comfort or a camera view is the reason you are considering BYD in the first place. A camera should still be demonstrated in the lighting and parking position you use.

MG's selected Comfort configuration lists a reversing camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, a 12.8-inch infotainment screen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The manufacturer's description also puts a heat pump in the Urban range, but its heated electric seats, heated steering wheel, wireless charging and surround-view camera are described as Premium Long Range features. Keep Boost separate from Comfort and keep MG Comfort separate from Premium when checking equipment. Try your own phone and the basic heating controls before treating screen size or a higher-grade image as added value.

China-side evidence

The UK specification matters more than the shared origin

Both cars have Chinese manufacturers, but that does not make Chinese-market equipment or a similarly named overseas version applicable to a UK order. The useful checks here are the four-seat UK Surf approval, the current front-drive MG Urban configuration and the actual grade written on the quotation. A feature shown in an overseas video or a photograph is not evidence that it is fitted to either selected car.

This comparison uses current UK manufacturer information and clearly identified retailer references checked on 21 October 2026. It is a documentary buying comparison, not a CathayEV road test, measured winter-range test or paired rapid-charging trial. We have not established a common luggage-measurement method or an all-in ownership-cost winner. Those limits leave a practical recommendation: start with the passenger count, verify the parking and loading tasks, then compare the delivered price for the equipment you will use.

Owner reports, complaint records and recall notices from the Chinese market, each with the source and the date we read it. Sample sizes are small; read them as signals, not survey results.

A showroom visit can settle the remaining choice

Book the two selected grades and arrive with the people and items that decide the purchase. Check rear-seat access with the front seats adjusted for the regular drivers, then load the same luggage with the seats in their normal positions. If five adults travel together, the MG's fifth approved seat is only the starting point: comfort and belt access still need a demonstration. The Surf cannot solve that requirement with a different seating arrangement.

Ask each retailer to put the exact battery, grade, paint, included cables, delivery date and cash total on the order. For public-charging users, add a route check and a tariff estimate rather than assuming a peak power rating determines the bill. For home-charging users, obtain the electrical survey before buying accessories. If four seats are sufficient and Surf fits the driveway and load, its lower reference makes it the first car to quote. If the fifth seat is needed, focus the extra spend on a correctly specified Urban instead. See other UK buying guides for adjacent choices.

Questions before ordering either budget EV

Does Dolphin Surf Boost have five seats?
No. The UK Surf has four approved seats. MG4 Urban Comfort Standard Range has five. An occasional fifth passenger is therefore a substantive reason to choose the MG, subject to a comfort and access check.
Is this the same MG4 as the older rear-wheel-drive car?
No. This comparison selects the new MG4 EV Urban Comfort Standard Range with 42.8 kWh and a 110 kW front-drive configuration. Older MG4 specifications and Urban Long Range or Premium equipment are not transferred to it.
Is MG definitely two minutes faster to charge?
The declared 10-80% figures are 28 minutes for MG Comfort Standard Range on a suitable 150 kW charger and 30 minutes for Surf Boost. They are not a matched real-world test, so they do not guarantee a two-minute difference on your route.
Can I subtract the advertised grant or finance contribution from £23,495?
Not without the current offer terms and a written quotation for your order. The £23,495 manufacturer configuration is the selected reference here. Finance contributions, grant eligibility and retailer discounts must be itemised separately.
Which should a four-person household try first?
Try Surf Boost first if a smaller body and lower purchase reference matter and the actual luggage fits. Try the larger Urban first if its fifth seat or cabin solves a regular task. Check the selected-grade equipment and delivered cash totals before committing.
