What it costs to buy

The Atto 3 Evo comes in two trims. Design at £38,990 is the entry point: RWD, single 309bhp motor, 316 miles WLTP. Excellence at £42,730 adds AWD, a panoramic roof, head-up display and heated rear seats. Non-free paint colours add £750. Both prices include delivery; first-year VED (£10) and First Registration Fee (£65) are counted within the OTR.

Road tax (VED)

EVs lost their road-tax exemption on 1 April 2025. First-year VED is £10. From Year 2, the standard annual rate is £200. The Expensive Car Supplement (£440/year, years 2–6) applies to EVs over £50,000 only — both Atto 3 Evo trims come in well below this threshold.

Home and public charging costs

Home charging at off-peak EV tariff rates (around 7p/kWh on Octopus Go) works out to approximately 2p per mile — compared to around 19p per mile for the average UK petrol car. At standard household rates (~25.7p/kWh), the figure is around 7.3p per mile. Public DC rapid charging at around 82–89p/kWh (GRIDSERVE/Osprey) works out to approximately 23–25p per mile, roughly comparable to petrol at current prices.

Insurance

The Atto 3 Evo's insurance groups are significantly higher than comparable rivals. Design sits in Group 40, Excellence in Group 42 out of 50. This is because the Evo's power jumped from 201bhp (original) to 308bhp on the Design trim — a substantial increase that actuaries have scored accordingly. By comparison, the Skoda Elroq is in groups 23–37 and the Kia EV3 in groups 33–37. Budget £700–£1,400 per year depending on your profile.

Servicing

BYD uses annual or 15,625-mile service intervals. Costs are modest: the 12-month and 36-month services are around £99 each (health check, cabin filter, fluid top-ups). The 24-month service adds brake fluid and gear oil (around £277), and the 48-month adds drive motor coolant (around £373). No oil changes, no spark plugs. BYD's 6-year/93,750-mile warranty — and 8-year/155,000-mile battery warranty — cover most mechanical concerns.

Company car tax (BiK)

At 4% BiK in 2026/27, the Atto 3 Evo generates just £52 per month in company car tax for a 40% taxpayer on the Design trim — versus approximately £380 per month for a comparable diesel SUV at 30% BiK. The P11D for the Design is estimated at approximately £38,915 (OTR minus first-year VED and DVLA registration fee). Fleet managers should confirm the exact figure with BYD's fleet department.

Depreciation

The Atto 3 Evo is predicted to retain approximately 40% of its value after three years — versus 47–51% for the Kia EV3 and 47–50% for the Skoda Elroq. That translates to roughly £15,600 for the Design and £17,100 for the Excellence at three years. On the used market, original Atto 3s (2023-plate) are currently listed at £18,000–£20,000 on AutoTrader — around 47–52% of the original purchase price, though that generation's pricing was lower. Lower residuals versus Korean rivals are driven by brand novelty, rapid product succession and a general EV used-market softness in the UK.

Three-year total cost of ownership

Modelled for a private buyer doing 10,000 miles per year with 80% home (standard rate) and 20% public DC charging, on PCP at 6.9% APR. Net three-year cost for the Atto 3 Evo Design is approximately £8,600 versus roughly £9,580 for a comparable Hyundai Tucson petrol. The EV wins primarily on energy savings — approximately £4,400 over three years — which outweighs the disadvantage in insurance and residual value.
