BYD Sealion 7 vs Kia EV6: Price, Range and Charging Compared
Two mid-size electric SUVs at very different prices, answering what UK searchers actually look for first: where each trim sits on price, how far each goes on a charge, and what the warranty and safety record looks like once you dig past the headline figures. Cathay EV checks BYD's own China-market evidence against Kia's published UK specification.
The verdict
The Sealion 7 undercuts the EV6 at no trim level: Kia's entry Air is cheaper than even the base Comfort, and it goes further on a single charge too. BYD counters with a longer battery warranty and a bigger buffer of miles on it.

Price: What Each Costs to Buy
The BYD Sealion 7 starts at £47,025 On The Road for the Comfort RWD, rising to £52,025 for the all-wheel-drive Design and £59,025 for the range-topping Excellence, the only trim with an 800-volt architecture and a larger 91.3kWh battery. The Kia EV6 starts at £45,635 for the entry Air, a rear-wheel-drive 225bhp car on an 84.0kWh battery, which puts it just under £1,400 below the cheapest Sealion 7 at the point of ordering. The gap only grows further up BYD's own range: the Design AWD costs more than £6,000 above the EV6's entry price, and the Comfort's own equipment, including a rotating 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 12-speaker Dynaudio system and standard vehicle-to-load power, does not close a gap of this size on its own. At their cheapest trims, the EV6 beats the Sealion 7 on price, battery size and single-charge range alike; BYD's advantages, the longer battery warranty and the option of 800-volt charging on a higher trim, only appear once you look past the entry-level comparison.
Range and Charging
All figures here are WLTP, and neither car should ever be read against a Chinese CLTC figure. The Sealion 7's WLTP range varies with trim and battery: 300 miles for the Comfort on its 82.5kWh pack, 283 miles for the heavier all-wheel-drive Design on the same battery, and 312 miles for the Excellence on a larger 91.3kWh pack. The Kia EV6's entry Air, on its own 84.0kWh battery, covers 361 miles WLTP, further than any Sealion 7 trim including the larger-battery Excellence. DC charging tells a different story. BYD publishes 150kW for the Comfort and Design, rising to 230kW on the Excellence's 800-volt architecture, and quotes a 10 to 80% top-up in around 32 minutes on the smaller battery and 24 minutes on the larger one. Kia has not published a peak DC-charging figure for the EV6 at all: a footnote naming the charger needed to hit its advertised charge time is not the same thing as a rating for the car itself.

Running Costs: Insurance and Company Car Tax
Insurance and company car tax are two of the biggest ongoing costs of either car, and only one side of this comparison is available to check. The Sealion 7 sits in insurance group 45 for the Comfort, rising to 47 for the Design and 49 for the Excellence. On the 2026 to 2027 Benefit in Kind schedule, the Comfort's roughly £46,935 P11D value works out at about £31 a month for a 20% taxpayer at the 4% zero-emission rate. Kia has published no insurance group for the EV6 among the sources this comparison uses, and no P11D-based company car tax figure either, so a buyer weighing the two on running costs should get both figures directly from an insurer and a fleet provider before ordering.

Warranty and Safety
BYD backs the Sealion 7 with a 6-year or 93,750-mile vehicle warranty and an 8-year or 155,000-mile battery warranty with a 70% capacity floor. That battery figure is the current one, confirmed by BYD's own January 2026 press release and by independent reporting, even though BYD's UK website itself still showed the earlier 125,000-mile figure as of July 2026. Kia's EV6 carries the brand's standard 7-year or 100,000-mile warranty on the vehicle, with a separate high-voltage battery warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles and its own 70% capacity guarantee for cars registered from January 2024. So Kia's vehicle cover runs a year and 6,250 miles longer, while BYD's battery cover runs 55,000 miles further than Kia's. Both earn 5-star Euro NCAP ratings on different tests: BYD's 2025 result scored 87% adult occupant, 93% child occupant, 76% vulnerable road users and 79% safety assist; Kia's 2022 result scored 90% adult, 86% child, 64% vulnerable road users and 87% safety assist. Neither car leads across all four categories.

China-side evidence
What China's Owners Say About BYD's Twin
The Sealion 7 sold in Britain is the export version of the 海狮07 EV, on sale in China since May 2024, so China's owner and complaint data speak to the hardware under this car's skin even though UK specification differs in places. The Chinese car starts at RMB 189,800, about 44% of the UK Comfort's list price, meaning the UK car costs roughly 2.3 times the Chinese guide price, though the two are not directly comparable given the different trims and equipment on offer. Autohome, China's largest owner-review platform, scores the domestic car above 74% of same-class rivals overall and above 84% of peers on range performance, a CLTC-cycle result that cannot be read against the UK's WLTP figures. China's official complaint platform logs 865.5 complaints per 10,000 vehicles for the 2024 and 2025 model years, with rear tyre inner-edge wear the single most frequent mechanical complaint. The UK car also drops China's higher-spec DiPilot 300 driver assistance, its LiDAR sensor and its Nvidia Orin-X chip, none of which is fitted to any UK-market Sealion 7. Kia's EV6 has no equivalent China-market data on the sources this comparison uses, so this page gives none rather than a guess.
