Huawei ADS Pro V5.0: what changed in August 2026 — and what it means for UK buyers
Huawei pushed its latest autonomous-driving OTA on 6 August 2026 as China's city Navigate-on-Pilot market cleared 1.8 million vehicles. None of it reaches UK roads — but the gap between Chinese EV hardware and what UK deliveries include is widening faster than most press coverage acknowledges.
What Huawei announced on 6 August 2026
Huawei pushed version 5.0 of its ADS Pro smart-driving stack on 6 August 2026, operating under the Qiankun brand it uses for its automotive AI systems. The upgrade is delivered entirely over the air — no hardware change is required for vehicles already running ADS 4 — and Huawei confirmed the rollout timetable is controlled by each OEM partner rather than by Huawei itself. That means Avatr, AITO (Seres), and the other brands that licence Qiankun will each announce their own push dates. The announcement came just days after Huawei's H1 2026 city NOA market figures confirmed it held 17.9% of China's city Navigate-on-Pilot segment — 323,000 installs — placing it ahead of Tesla China and Momenta in a market growing at roughly 61% within a single half-year.
The five new capabilities in ADS Pro V5.0
Five changes are documented in the V5.0 release notes. The headline addition is campus NCA — Navigate-on-Pilot extended to cover more than one million parking sites and university campuses, expanding the system's operational envelope well beyond its original motorway-and-city-road boundaries. The remaining four address specific edge cases that triggered driver intervention in ADS 4: a three-point turn assistant for narrow roads; GAEB (Generalised Auto Emergency Braking) for irregular or moving obstacles outside the original training domain; ESA (Emergency Steering Assist) for sudden lateral corrections; and a tuning pass on lane-change smoothness. Remote Assist detection range has been upgraded from its previous figure to 120 metres. The underlying architecture — labelled WEWA 2.0 by Huawei — was carried over from ADS 5.0 (launched April 2024) and adds an AI agent layer to improve prediction of traffic participants and coordination with the chassis.
How big China's city NOA market has become
The V5.0 announcement arrives against a backdrop of rapid market expansion. Cathay's H1 2026 data — sourced from d1ev.com's insurance-registration analysis — shows that 1,802,000 Chinese vehicles were insured with city Navigate-on-Pilot active in the first half of 2026. January 2026's monthly installation rate of 253,000 vehicles grew to 408,000 by June — a 61% uplift within six months. Huawei holds the top position; Tesla China is second (240,000 installs, 13.3% share) using entirely self-developed software with no Huawei involvement. Momenta, the B2B supplier whose WRD platform underpins brands including Volkswagen's Chinese joint-venture cars, is third with 214,000 installs and 11.8% share. Leapmotor — whose B10 has been on sale in the UK since December 2025 — is building its own full-stack city NOA, targeting a China launch before end-2026. The brand reported 101,267 global deliveries in July 2026, the first Chinese new-force brand to clear 100,000 in a single calendar month.
Cameras vs LiDAR: what Waymo's CEO said the day before
On 5 August 2026 — the day before Huawei's V5.0 announcement — Waymo chief executive Dmitri Dolgov told Y Combinator that cameras alone are insufficient for full self-driving capability, and that a hardware baseline of camera plus LiDAR plus millimetre-wave radar fusion is required. He cited Waymo's data showing a serious injury rate 94% lower than human drivers. A separate analysis from the same period placed Tesla Robotaxi accident rates at roughly three times the human average in early deployment. The contrast matters for UK buyers evaluating Chinese EV ADAS claims, because most UK-specification Chinese cars arrive without LiDAR. Huawei's own ADS Max hardware — used in Avatr, which won five of six rounds at the 2026 Taizhou smart-driving evaluation with zero safety deductions — uses multi-LiDAR arrays. But that hardware does not appear in the mass-market Huawei partner vehicles that are, for the most part, the ones UK buyers can actually purchase. Avatr is not currently sold in the UK.
What UK buyers of Chinese EVs should take from all of this
The ADS Pro V5.0 launch reinforces a pattern UK buyers need to keep in mind: Chinese ADAS capability and UK delivery are on separate trajectories, and the gap is widening. Campus NCA, three-point turn assist, GAEB, and ESA run on China's high-precision mapping infrastructure and require a type-approval framework that does not yet exist in Great Britain. They will not appear as OTA updates on UK cars. What matters when you are evaluating a Leapmotor B10 or a BYD Seal or a Smart #1 is the L2 feature set confirmed active in the UK-specification vehicle — adaptive cruise, lane-centring assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning. Leapmotor's UK B10 page lists 17 confirmed UK-active ADAS features as of 3 August 2026. That is the number worth comparing with a Volkswagen ID.3 or a Kia EV6. The risk for UK buyers is not that Chinese ADAS is behind — China's best hardware is ahead of most European equivalents. The risk is assuming that the advertising material showing city NOA reflects what you will receive in your right-hand-drive car in Manchester or Edinburgh. It does not.
