Leapmotor B10 vs BYD Dolphin (UK 2026): Which £30k EV Is Actually Worth Your Money?

These two cars are priced almost identically in the UK. The Leapmotor B10 lists at £31,495 OTR; Leapmotor applies its own LEAP-GRANT discount of £1,500, bringing the retail price to £29,995. Verify the grant's availability when you order — the original terms ran to December 2025 and continuation into 2026 has not been officially confirmed in writing, though multiple UK retailers continue quoting the lower figure as of July 2026. The BYD Dolphin Comfort is a straightforward £30,230 OTR with no headline grant involved.

On paper that is a £235 gap — effectively the same car in price terms. But the value proposition differs markedly. The B10 comes as a single, generously equipped trim: 14.6-inch touchscreen, 360° cameras, heated and ventilated front seats, heat pump, V2L, and a 168 kW DC charging capability are all standard. For the Dolphin you have a choice of two trims (Comfort at £30,230 or Design at £31,730), with the panoramic glass roof and ventilated seats reserved for the upper variant.

Both sit at 4% BiK for company-car drivers in 2026/27, making them equally attractive on salary sacrifice. At list price both also cross the £40,000 Expensive Car Supplement threshold (VED years two to six), so the LEAP-GRANT is not just a cosmetic discount — at £29,995 the B10 stays below it.

This is a question with very different answers for each car, and it matters for your warranty.

The BYD Dolphin is made by BYD — the world's largest new-energy vehicle maker by volume, listed on HKEX (01211.HK) and Shenzhen (002594.SZ), with its own Blade Battery, semiconductor, and motor manufacturing. BYD's UK survival risk is Very Low. It now has over 125 franchised UK dealership sites and sells five-plus models here. The Dolphin's 8-year/155,350-mile battery warranty is backed by a company with proven global scale.

The Leapmotor B10 has a more layered story. Leapmotor (SEHK: 9863) is a Hangzhou-based EV maker founded in 2015, but in the UK it operates through Leapmotor International (LPMI) — a 51/49 joint venture where Stellantis holds the majority stake. Stellantis runs Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat, and Vauxhall dealer networks in the UK; Leapmotor B10s are sold exclusively within Stellantis-partner dealerships. Parts distribution runs through Stellantis logistics — a meaningful structural advantage over standalone Chinese entrants.

The complication: Stellantis posted a $26.3 billion loss for full-year 2025 — its first annual loss as a combined company. Mitigants are real: LPMI European sales surged in early 2026; Stellantis and Leapmotor announced plans in May 2026 to begin assembling the B10 at Stellantis's Zaragoza, Spain plant (subject to feasibility studies); and Chinese state-owned FAW Group invested $530 million for a 5% stake in Leapmotor in December 2025. Leapmotor China achieved its first profitable half-year in H1 2025. The net assessment: Leapmotor UK survival risk is Low-Medium — substantially lower than a standalone Chinese entrant, but with more moving parts than BYD.

Both cars offer around 265–270 miles WLTP — close enough that range is not the differentiator. The charging story is.

The Leapmotor B10 peaks at 168 kW DC, with 30–80% in approximately 20 minutes under ideal conditions. This is genuinely competitive — better than most similarly priced rivals and substantially ahead of the Dolphin. EV Database models the 10–80% time at around 26 minutes with an average charge rate of about 110 kW. Leapmotor also fits battery preconditioning (manual, via app), meaning you can warm the pack before arriving at a rapid charger.

The BYD Dolphin's DC charging is contested. BYD UK's official site says 100 kW; independent testers at Carwow record 110 kW peak, while EV Database and RAC Drive cite 88 kW. In practice, expect 10–80% in 36–45 minutes, and there is no battery preconditioning. At 88 kW the Dolphin trails the class average for 2025-era compact EVs; the MG4 charges at 117 kW and Renault 5 at 100 kW. This is the B10's clearest advantage.

Real-world range is harder to verify for the B10 (fewer UK owner data points — first UK deliveries were December 2025). EV Database models ~255 miles in combined mild conditions. The Dolphin has a fuller picture: Carwow tested ~240 miles; expect 215–250 miles depending on season and speed, consistent with both Chinese and UK owner data.

On safety both cars are 5-star Euro NCAP. But the B10's is more recent (tested November 2025 on the production UK model), and its scores are marginally higher in adult and child occupant protection. The Dolphin's 5-star rating dates from 2023 and was correctly earned on the Euro-spec extended-body car.

The warranty split is the clearest head-to-head win in this comparison — and it goes to the Dolphin. BYD offers 6 years / 93,750 miles vehicle warranty, backed by a company that has been operating in the UK for years. Leapmotor offers only 4 years / 60,000 miles — a full two years shorter. For a company that is newer to UK service, that shorter coverage window matters. The battery warranty is closer: 8 years / 100,000 miles for the B10 versus 8 years / 155,350 miles for the Dolphin — again an edge to BYD.

These two cars share a price bracket, a Chinese origin, and a compact-SUV footprint — but they prioritise different things. The B10 is the charging-speed and tech-freshness pick; the Dolphin is the space, warranty, and proven-brand pick.

Choose the **Leapmotor B10** if: you regularly use public rapid chargers and 20-minute top-ups matter to your routine; you want the most comprehensively equipped single-trim below £30,000; and you are comfortable with a shorter vehicle warranty backed by a Stellantis dealer network that can genuinely support you.

Choose the **BYD Dolphin** if: you prioritise rear passenger space (the Dolphin has a longer wheelbase feel in the cabin); a six-year vehicle warranty is important to your peace of mind; you prefer the reassurance of BYD's global scale and 125+ UK dealer network; or the prospect of slow charging is less important because you charge mainly at home.

The B10 LEAP-GRANT is the wild card. If it is confirmed available when you order, the B10 is the better-equipped car at the lower price with the faster charger. If the grant has expired and the true price is £31,495, the Dolphin at £30,230 is the more straightforward choice — longer warranty, larger brand, and only 5 miles less WLTP range.
