Smart #5 vs XPeng G6 UK 2026: Which Premium Chinese SUV Wins?

These two SUVs come from very different corporate structures. The smart brand sits within a 50-50 joint venture between Geely Automobile Group and Mercedes-Benz, headquartered in Ningbo with production in Xi'an. That dual-parent structure is rare and reassuring: even if Geely stumbled, Mercedes-Benz involvement provides a backstop that few Chinese EV brands can match. Combined global scale runs into the tens of millions of vehicles a year.

XPeng operates as an independent Chinese EV start-up, listed on NYSE (XPEV) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (9868). It reported a net loss of RMB 11.4 billion for full-year 2025, though Q4 2025 briefly swung to profit. The mitigating factor is significant: in July 2023 Volkswagen acquired a 4.99 per cent stake for approximately US$700 million and signed a master EV architecture agreement in February 2024. Cash reserves at end-2025 stood at RMB 47.7 billion, providing a meaningful runway. The VW stake does not make XPeng immune to disruption, but it substantially de-risks the seven-year warranty horizon.

The Smart #5 scales across six trims up to the BRABUS at a price point not published at time of writing; the XPeng G6 offers three variants up to the Performance AWD Black Edition at £49,990. BiK company car tax on both is 4 per cent for 2026/27, rising to 5 per cent in 2027/28 — favourably low compared with almost any petrol equivalent.

For a standard-rate taxpayer leasing via salary sacrifice at £39,990 P11D (G6 Standard), monthly BiK is roughly £27; Smart #5 Pro at £39,800 P11D gives a similar figure. The cost difference here is trivial. What matters more is residual value, and that data for the Smart #5 — barely months into UK showrooms — is not yet available from CDL or other UK residual authorities. XPeng G6 residual data is similarly thin, though the brand's relative youth in the UK is a headwind. Both should be treated as high-risk residual propositions until CDL publishes data.

Both cars use 800V architecture, which puts them among the fastest-charging EVs on sale in the UK at any price. Where they differ is in how they deploy it.

The Smart #5 Pro (base trim) offers 288 miles WLTP from its 76 kWh battery. Step up to Pro+ or Premium and you get 366 miles WLTP from the full 100 kWh pack — the longest range of any smart product. The BRABUS, Pulse and Summit Edition trims deliver 335 miles. DC charging peaks at 400 kW on the full-battery trims, with a claimed 10–80 per cent in 18 minutes. The Smart #5 also supports AC charging at up to 22 kW (3-phase), which is class-leading for overnight charging without a DC stop.

The XPeng G6 Standard Range achieves 292 miles WLTP, the Long Range 326 miles. Peak DC charging is higher at 451 kW for the Long Range and Performance variants — among the fastest raw rates of any EV on sale in the UK. Fleet News' real-world CCS test recorded 10–80 per cent in 14 minutes at a 350 kW charger (average 250 kW). Autocar recorded 372 kW peak in a real-world 12-minute 17–80 per cent session. In practice, both cars are rapid enough that a ten-minute detour means roughly a 150-mile top-up. The G6 Standard Range AC charging is 11 kW.

For maximum quoted range, the Smart #5 Pro+ wins (366 miles vs 326 miles). For absolute peak charging speed, the XPeng G6 Long Range wins (451 kW vs 400 kW). In everyday UK use — Gridserve, Pod Point, 150–350 kW chargers — both will comfortably add 100 miles in under 20 minutes.

Both cars carry five-star Euro NCAP ratings, but the Smart #5 holds the sharper pencil here. Tested in 2025, it was named Best in Class among large SUVs — a category award that goes to the highest-scoring car in its segment. Auto Express reports Adult protection at 92 per cent and Child protection at 91 per cent. XPeng G6 scored five stars in 2024 with 88 per cent adult protection and 85 per cent child protection. The G6's Vulnerable Road Users score (81 per cent) beats the Smart #5 (75 per cent), which is the one area the XPeng has the edge.

Warranty is where these cars diverge in a way that should matter to UK buyers. For UK buyers: three years versus five years on the vehicle warranty is a real-world difference if anything goes wrong in years four or five. XPeng wins this category, even if its brand longevity risk slightly offsets the benefit.

At an entry price separated by just £190, these two SUVs compete directly for the same UK buyer. They are more different than their price tags suggest.

**Choose the Smart #5 if:** you prioritise safety (Best-in-Class NCAP 2025), family practicality (What Car? Family EV of the Year 2026), or maximum range on the highest trim (366 miles WLTP on Pro+). The Geely-Mercedes joint venture is the most stable ownership structure of any Chinese EV brand in this guide. The 3-year vehicle warranty is the Smart #5's sharpest drawback. In years four and five, you carry repair risk that XPeng G6 buyers do not. That said, unlimited mileage on three years compares well with many manufacturer warranties that cap at 60,000 miles.

**Choose the XPeng G6 if:** you value a longer vehicle warranty (5 years vs 3 years), the absolute fastest UK charging speed (451 kW peak), or you prefer a more established product with two years of UK media data behind it. Autocar's 6/10 reflects XPeng's honest acknowledgement that UK buyers are not getting China's full XNGP experience — but for buyers who want ADAS as a safety net rather than an autonomy system, XPILOT Assist is competent.

One shared caveat: both are residual value unknowns. Chinese brands depreciating faster than European equivalents is a well-documented pattern (CDL Oct 2025). Neither car has a strong resale track record in the UK yet. Salary sacrifice or contract hire removes this risk; private buyers should factor in a higher-than-average depreciation assumption.

**Bottom line:** The Smart #5 is the more rounded family proposition. The XPeng G6 is the better choice for warranty-conscious private buyers who charge primarily at high-speed DC points.
