A Chinese automotive blogger's independent lab test has thrown BYD's flagship new battery technology into dispute — and BYD's response has escalated the story further. Here is what happened, what the data shows, and why it matters to anyone considering a BYD in the UK.
BYD's July 2026 China sales totalled 419,211 vehicles — roughly 13,500 cars and trucks every single day of the month. That is not a company in any immediate financial difficulty. The dispute over Blade Battery 2.0, therefore, is a technology credibility story rather than a brand survival story. Context matters: a market-leading manufacturer fielding questions about a flagship product claim is a different situation from a marginal brand in trouble. Still, for UK buyers relying on BYD's own marketing of its battery technology, the dispute is worth understanding.
BYD launched Blade Battery 2.0 with headline figures that would place it among the fastest-charging LFP cells in production: a 7–97% charge in 8 minutes and 32 seconds on the Fangchengbao Tai 3 AWD, drawing a peak of approximately 1,200 amperes. That performance, if accurate, would represent a genuine step forward for LFP chemistry, which has historically lagged ternary (NMC) cells on peak charge rates.
The dispute began when a Chinese automotive blogger using the handle Cai Shen Dao published an independent lab test claiming results inconsistent with BYD's figures. The independent retest by Guolian Research Institute found a peak battery management system (BMS) temperature of 70.5 °C and a maximum surface temperature of 78.5 °C during the fast-charge cycle. Whether these temperatures are within acceptable parameters — and whether they match BYD's own internal data — is the crux of the dispute.
What elevated this from a technical spat to a broader story was BYD's reported response. According to Car News China (31 Jul 2026), BYD allegedly filed a police report against the blogger Cai Shen Dao. Subsequently, the Shenzhen Cyberspace Administration restricted Cai Shen Dao's account under China's Qinglang internet-cleansing campaign in July 2026.
Cathay EV takes no side on the political dimension of this. What is relevant to UK buyers is the practical question: does a major automaker's response to a critical test provide more or less transparency about the underlying technical question? As of 31 July 2026, there is no publicly available independent retest by a body acceptable to all parties that resolves the temperature and charge-speed claims either way.
It is worth noting that Qinglang campaign restrictions apply broadly to internet speech in China and are not exclusively applied to cases where the restricted party is wrong. The restriction tells us nothing definitive about the accuracy of the lab test data.
The direct answer is: very little, for now. Blade Battery 2.0 as promoted in the Fangchengbao Tai 3 — a China-market performance SUV, not sold in the UK — is not in any current UK-market BYD model. UK buyers of the Dolphin, Atto 3 EVO, Seal, and Sealion 7 are getting the established Blade Battery 1.x chemistry, which has a solid multi-year real-world track record including in the UK.
The broader relevance is two-fold. First, it illustrates the now-familiar pattern of Chinese EV manufacturers making ambitious technical claims that later require qualification. UK buyers who compare Chinese EV spec sheets against European competitors should continue treating claimed charge speeds as 'peak under ideal conditions' rather than everyday reality. Second, the manufacturer response pattern — legal action against a critic rather than publication of counter-data — is a transparency signal worth noting.
If and when Blade Battery 2.0 arrives in UK-market BYD models, Cathay EV will report the independently verified specifications.
The Blade Battery 2.0 dispute has not, as of 31 July 2026, produced independent evidence that UK-market BYD cars are unsafe or materially different from what BYD advertises. What the dispute does add is a useful data point about how BYD manages public criticism of its technology claims. That is not proof the critic is correct — the temperatures in question may well be within safe operational parameters — but it does mean the technical question is not yet publicly answered.
