BYD's Two August Launches: Qin Max Flash-Charge Sedan and Sealion 08 Giant SUV

Neither the Qin Max nor the Sealion 08 is heading to UK showrooms this year. BYD's established pattern, however, is consistent: a model launches in China, sells in volume for 12 to 24 months, and then arrives in Europe with a line-up trimmed for right-hand drive and local safety certification. The Sealion 7 followed that arc exactly, as did the Atto 3 and the Seal. Watching what BYD is testing and selling in China is the most reliable predictor of the 2027–28 UK line-up available — considerably more reliable than dealer speculation or press releases. Both of these August 2026 China launches are worth understanding if you are buying, owning, or simply keeping an eye on BYD in the UK.

The Qin Max is the next generation of BYD's long-running Qin saloon family — a D-segment car that sits in Volkswagen Passat or Skoda Octavia territory in terms of footprint and market positioning. At 4,866 mm long with a 2,820 mm wheelbase, it sits close to the BYD Seal dimensionally. The headline for the BEV variants is the charging claim: BYD states 10 to 97 per cent in nine minutes, enabled by what appears to be a high-C-rate LFP cell in the top-spec 64.315 kWh pack. The lower battery option is 52.868 kWh, with a claimed CLTC range of 530 km — note this is CLTC, the Chinese official test cycle, which consistently produces figures higher than the WLTP standard used in the UK. Real-world British driving conditions would yield materially less. On autonomy, DiPilot 300 — BYD's mid-tier system, also marketed as God's Eye B — comes with LiDAR as standard. This is a meaningful step above the ADAS fitment on the Seal and Atto 3 currently sold in the UK. A DM-i plug-in hybrid variant is also offered alongside the BEV, using a 1.5-litre 74 kW engine paired with a 175 kW motor and an LFP battery.

The Sealion 08 is a fundamentally different kind of vehicle. At 5,115 × 1,999 × 1,800 mm with a 3,030 mm wheelbase, it is a full-size three-row family SUV — longer than a BMW X7 and substantially bigger than the Sealion 7 that BYD currently sells in the UK. BYD claims 710 to 900 km CLTC range depending on variant; again, these are Chinese test-cycle figures, and WLTP certification has not yet been announced. The three motor configurations run from 320 kW rear-wheel drive through 370 kW long-range rear-wheel drive to a 585 kW AWD. Two battery options exist — 92.093 kWh and 115.072 kWh, both LFP. DiPilot 5.0 — BYD's top-tier autonomous driving system, with both urban and highway NOA capability — is standard fitment. The chassis gains DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering, technologies that add meaningful ride quality differentiation. Interior highlights include a ceiling-mounted rear passenger screen, zero-gravity front passenger seat, captain chairs in row two, and suede headlining — premium features that indicate BYD is targeting the premium family SUV segment, not volume. Both five-seat and six-seat captain-chair layouts are offered.

Taken together, these two launches make BYD's 2026 technology hierarchy legible. DiPilot 300 (God's Eye B) with LiDAR is now the mid-market offering — available on a mass-market D-segment saloon, not just flagship products. DiPilot 5.0 with urban NOA sits above it, reserved for larger, more expensive vehicles such as the Sealion 08. Both systems include LiDAR as standard fitment, confirming that laser-based sensing has moved from premium option to baseline across BYD's new model range in China. The flash-charging story reinforces the same pattern: nine-minute charging on a mid-market saloon indicates that the Blade Battery's high-C-rate capability has been extended well beyond luxury or performance applications. Both new models also offer DM-i plug-in hybrid variants, confirming BYD's dual-powertrain strategy shows no signs of abandoning combustion-assisted range in the family segment — relevant context for UK buyers who ask whether BYD will offer PHEVs here. In parallel, BYD filed seven solid-state battery patents in August 2026, targeting small-scale production in 2027. The dual-electrolyte cathode approach cited in the filings is a credible technical direction, though a commercially relevant UK-market SSB vehicle is likely to be several years beyond that date.

UK buyers can currently purchase the Seal, Atto 3, Sealion 7 and — as of August 2026 — the Denza D9 PHEV MPV. None of the existing UK BYD range carries DiPilot 300, DiPilot 5.0 or LiDAR. UK ADAS capability lags behind China specification, a gap Cathay EV has documented in detail for the Seal and the Sealion 7. The nine-minute flash charging available on the Qin Max is also a China-market proposition: the UK's ultra-rapid charging network above 350 kW remains sparse, and BYD's current UK models are not certified to the charge rates required. None of this is a reason to avoid a BYD today. The Seal, Atto 3 and Sealion 7 are competitive, well-priced and backed by BYD's industry-leading eight-year battery warranty. What the Qin Max and Sealion 08 tell you is what the technology trajectory looks like — and that if you keep your BYD for four or five years, OTA updates will be incrementally improving a hardware stack that is already a generation behind the current China spec. If you are thinking about a BYD in 2027 or 2028, these are the benchmarks the European line-up will eventually be measured against.
