Deepal S05: Changan's £13k-equivalent crossover ships with LiDAR and end-to-end AI — what this benchmark tells UK buyers

Who makes Deepal — and why Changan matters
Deepal (深蓝) is a sub-brand of Changan Automobile, one of China's four large state-owned automotive groups alongside SAIC, FAW and Dongfeng. Changan has been manufacturing vehicles since 1862 — it holds the distinction of being China's oldest motor company by origin — and generated over 2.7 million annual vehicle sales in recent years across its portfolio of brands including Changan, Deepal, Avatr (a joint venture with CATL and Huawei) and others. Deepal was created as Changan's volume new-energy sub-brand, targeting a slightly younger, more technology-focused demographic than the traditional Changan lineup. In terms of financial stability, Changan's scale and state backing make Deepal substantially less susceptible to the brand-survival risks that apply to smaller, venture-funded Chinese EV names. Deepal delivered 29,213 vehicles in July 2026 alone — healthy volume for a sub-brand in its growth phase — with a reported order-fulfilment efficiency rate of 94.13%, indicating the factory is keeping pace with demand rather than building a paper order book. The brand claims presence in 100 countries through exports.
The S05: three powertrains from ¥119,900
The Deepal S05 is a compact crossover — equivalent class to an MG S5 EV or Omoda E5 — launched in China on 6 August 2026. It comes in three powertrain configurations: a 56.12 kWh BEV with 520 km CLTC range; a 68.82 kWh BEV with 620 km CLTC range; and a range-extended EV (REEV) variant with a 28.39 kWh battery paired with a petrol range-extender, claiming 215 km pure EV range and 1,310 km combined CLTC range. The entry price in China is ¥119,900 CNY, with a limited introductory variant at ¥115,900 CNY. At current exchange rates, ¥119,900 is approximately £13,000 — though this figure is for Chinese-market context only and does not translate to a likely UK retail price, which would carry type-approval costs, import duties, warranty provisions and distributor margin on top. The REEV powertrain's 1,310 km combined figure is a CLTC number (Chinese test cycle) and cannot be compared directly to WLTP; real-world European range would be considerably lower. These are Chinese domestic specifications.
The ADAS benchmark: LiDAR and end-to-end AI on a ¥120k car
The element of the S05 launch that warrants UK buyers' attention is the ADAS hardware on the top trim. It ships with a Hesai 128-line LiDAR plus 26 total sensors, running DEEPALOS 4.2 — Deepal's proprietary operating system — with what the company describes as a '1-piece end-to-end AI driving' architecture. End-to-end AI driving (also called 'BEV + Transformer' or 'vision-language model' approaches by different Chinese makers) is a significant architecture shift from rules-based ADAS: instead of separate perception, prediction and planning modules, a single neural network processes sensor data and generates steering, braking and throttle commands directly. Huawei's ADS Pro V5.0, XPeng's XNGP and now Deepal's DEEPALOS 4.2 are all moving in this direction. What makes the S05 noteworthy is the price point at which this hardware appears: the equivalent of roughly £13,000 in China. That technology gap — hardware in this class arrives in Europe on £35,000–50,000 cars — is the core intelligence signal for UK buyers. It tells you where the Chinese EV industry's cost curve is, and therefore what the next generation of Chinese export EVs will likely offer. None of this ADAS functionality can be assumed to transfer to export markets: high-precision maps required for City NOA are geofenced to China, regulatory frameworks differ, and UK-spec versions of any future Deepal export vehicle would require separate assessment. The HUD configuration, which replaces the traditional instrument cluster on the top trim, is another design choice that reflects confidence in the software stack.
What this means for UK buyers
Deepal has no UK presence, no announced right-hand-drive plans and no dealership network in Britain. The S05 is a Chinese domestic product. The UK relevance operates as industry intelligence rather than a buying guide. Three observations worth carrying forward: first, the technology floor is rising. If a ¥120k Chinese crossover ships with 128-line LiDAR and end-to-end AI, the UK export EVs that follow in 18–24 months will be built on hardware that is at least as capable, even if geofencing limits what the software actually does in Britain. Second, the REEV powertrain — 28 kWh battery plus petrol extender, 215 km pure EV — is roughly analogous to what Leapmotor offers in the C10 REEV (already on sale in the UK). UK buyers can use the Deepal spec as a reference point for what that class of powertrain looks like when optimised. Third, Changan's financial strength (state-backed, massive scale) means any future Deepal export programme would have industrial backing behind it. UK buyers who track brand-survival risk in Chinese EVs should note that Deepal is substantially lower risk in that dimension than many venture-funded names.
Honest assessment
Deepal is one of the more credible Chinese EV sub-brands to watch: state-backed parent, genuine volume (29,000+ monthly deliveries), a technically ambitious software stack and pricing that would be genuinely disruptive if reproduced in export form. The S05's end-to-end AI at ¥120k is a product benchmark rather than a buyer opportunity for anyone reading this in the UK. Changan has previously attempted European market entries through various partnerships without sustained success; whether Deepal gets a UK chapter depends on distribution decisions that have not yet been made. The 10-minute fast-charge claim from Gasgoo's July results coverage warrants caution — no technical specification for the charge rate or kWh delivered in 10 minutes is provided, and this figure is characteristic of marketing-oriented framing rather than a verified charging curve. Treat it as an unverified highlight until the S05's charge architecture is fully documented in independent tests.
