Deepal S05 Gets LiDAR Standard in China — and Charges 30-80% in 15 Minutes

Deepal (深蓝汽车) is a dedicated battery-electric and range-extended electric brand launched by Changan Automobile in 2022. Changan is one of China's four largest state-backed automakers, with roots in military manufacturing going back to the 1860s. The company operates large-scale joint ventures with Ford and Mazda alongside its own Chinese brands — Changan, Avatr and Deepal among them. That state ownership provides a very different kind of stability than private EV start-ups: Changan is not going anywhere. The S05 is Deepal's volume model, contributing 49.4% of all Deepal deliveries in the first half of 2026. The brand reports global exports to more than 100 countries, which means supply chains and service infrastructure are increasingly internationalised.

The August 2026 Deepal S05 refresh comes in five trims, spanning two BEV battery sizes and a REEV (range-extended electric) variant. The BEV uses CATL LFP cells in either 56.12 kWh or 68.82 kWh configurations, delivering 520 km or 620 km CLTC range respectively. The REEV pairs a 28.39 kWh battery with a petrol generator for 1,310 km combined range and 215 km pure-electric. Note that CLTC figures typically translate to around 75-80% of WLTP in real-world European conditions — so the 620 km CLTC BEV equates to roughly 465-500 km WLTP equivalent. China pricing starts at CNY 115,900 for the limited-time opening offer (normal from CNY 119,900), topping out at CNY 144,900 for the top trim. At mid-2026 exchange rates, the entry price is approximately £12,800 — less than half the cost of a comparable UK-market Chinese EV.

The headline technology story of the S05 refresh is that 3C supercharging — a 30-80% charge in 15 minutes — is now standard across all five trims, not a top-spec option. This is faster than anything available on UK-market Chinese EVs at the time of writing: for context, the Leapmotor B10 (a class-below vehicle) charges at 168 kW, while the S05's 3C system implies roughly 200 kW+ peak charging at the 68.82 kWh pack size. The LiDAR hardware — Hesai 128-line plus 26 supporting sensors — is reserved for the top trim, paired with an end-to-end AI driving software stack. The infotainment runs Deepal OS 4.2 on a 3nm automotive-grade processor, displayed on a 15.6-inch rotating 2.5K screen with a 50-inch AR heads-up display. This is broadly comparable with the best Chinese cockpit hardware available at the time, at a price point that has no European equivalent.

Deepal's S05 delivered 64,716 units in China in the first half of 2026 — up 56.4% year-on-year and representing nearly half of Deepal's total volume. July 2026 saw 29,213 vehicles across all Deepal models. These are not niche figures: at this sales rate, Deepal has built the kind of production scale that drives component-cost reductions and service-network expansion. The S05 is also Deepal's primary export vehicle, with the brand now present in more than 100 countries. For context on the pricing dynamic: the S05's CNY 115,900 entry price sits in the same bracket as a base Leapmotor T03 in China. The technology content — 3C charging, LiDAR, rotating screen — is substantially richer than what that price point implies in any European market.

Deepal has no UK sales operations as of September 2026. The S05 is not available through any UK dealer, and there are no publicly confirmed plans for UK import. The brand's export push covers markets including Australia, Southeast Asia and parts of Europe, but right-hand-drive markets have not been announced. This means UK buyers cannot purchase the S05 — but the car is still relevant as a benchmark. The S05 illustrates what Changan, a top-four Chinese automaker, charges its own domestic customers for LiDAR, 3C charging and a rotating screen: roughly £12,800 at current exchange rates. Equivalent UK-market models start at approximately £29,995 (Leapmotor B10) or £32,750 (Leapmotor C10) — both left-hand-drive redesigns that arrive without LiDAR. The gap between Chinese domestic technology and what reaches UK shores is material, and the S05 refresh makes it quantifiable. Should Deepal announce UK plans, the LEAP-GRANT/Stellantis parallel is instructive: a strong parent-company relationship and a committed import partner would be the minimum threshold for a credible UK launch.
